CANDY CANE LANE SLIDER COUNTDOWN CALENDAR | with Jennifer

Hello Doodlebug friends. Advent calendars and countdowns are my favorite things to make during the holidays. I'd never done a slider countdown before and thought it would be fun to make one with some Doodlebug die-cuts from the Candy Cane Lane collection.
For this piece all the die-cuts were mounted to wood and the overall size is approximately 19" x 9".

The three main layers that were used to create this piece are shown below. The first layer includes Santa and his reindeer, as well as some clouds. To define and outline the clouds, I used some chunky and regular twine.

The second layer is the most fun. With a row of cute colorful houses and vinyl countdown numbers. To help distinguish the houses from the clouds, a grey skyline was cut and mounted to the back. Both of the larger pieces were made with notches at the bottom so they could slot into the base.

The base has three rows of slots: the first two for the clouds, the second for the houses, and the third for the car that counts down the days until Christmas.

The back window of the car die-cut was cut out, and small notches were added to the wheels so that the car could easily slide along the countdown. For added interest, some Christmas trees and other die-cuts were added to the piece.

At the last minute, I decided to add some puffy hearts to the chimneys so made some lollipop shaped pieces to attach to the back of each one.

I also tweaked the design of the countdown strip slightly. This design appears to be more like piles of snow on the side of the road, which was my intention.

Here are a few more close-ups of the finished piece.

Thank you for joining me today, and Merry Christmas!

CANDY CANE LANE ADVENT CALENDAR TRAIN | with Kathy

Every year I love making a new Advent Calendar with Doodlebug's Christmas Collection.  This year I worked with Lori Whitlock to come up with this fun train SVG... and I'm so happy with how it turned out using the Candy Cane Lane Collection!  Take a peek...

I started with this SVG file from Lori Whitlock.  I made the base of the train with white cardstock.  I then started decorating with the papers and embellishments from Candy Cane Lane.

I made Santa the conductor, of course!  I used the Sweet Santa Stand Alone Doodle Cuts to make him.  I also decorated the sides of the conductor's box with cute presents from the Odds & Ends.

I covered each of the 24 boxes with papers from the 6x6 pad.  I used the new Alphabet Soup Puffy Stickers to number my boxes.  The wheels also have some sprinkles in their centers.  To embellish a bit more, I added more Odds & Ends to some of the boxes.  The boxes are a good size I could fit 3 candies in each.

The other side of the train was decorated in the same manner.  I have a fun trick I used to make my Santa show the same from both sides of the train... I cut one Santa and all his pieces from  my papers.  Then, I turned those papers over and cut a second set of pieces.  This gives you a mirror image of your first set to glue back to back so you can have him look the same on both sides!

The front of my train was decorated with a star from the icon stickers sheet and I made some snowflake "smoke puffs" using the snowflake dies in the Snow Cute Stand Alone Doodle Cuts.

Luckily I didn't eat all the candy before it was time to fill the boxes!  That's it for me today, thanks for stopping by to peek!
